Dave Ramsey on Fire at Catalyst Conference

God blessed me with a trip to Catalyst Conference this past week. On Tuesday I loaded up in a big van with 8 others to make the 13+ hour drive to Atlanta, Georgia. We enjoyed a late dinner in Birmingham, Alabama at the famous barbecue restaurant, Dreamland, and arrived at our hotel well after midnight.

For the next three days (Wednesday through Friday) I was privileged to listen to some of the top pastors and business consultants teach on leadership, passion, culture, and other similar subjects. For example, Jim Collins, author of Good to Great, emphasized how “we aren’t imprisoned [or freed] by our circumstances; we are freed [or imprisoned] by our choices.” (additions mine). And Seth Godin, marketing genius, author of Purple Cow, and the author of the newly released book “Tribes,” talked about leadership in the context of tribal identification.

One speaker who really caught my attention was Dave Ramsey given the current focus on our economy. Dave can be watched on Fox News from time to time as he contributes to Fox Business, he has been on all the major networks recently in light of the economic situation in the world, and he has a daily radio show that can be heard all across the country. He owns his own business and teaches on personal finance. Many churches teach classes based on his Financial Peace University. The bottom line with regard to Dave is that he is a well-respected voice on the economy and on personal finance. He also is a follower of Jesus Christ who emphasizes the biblical principles regarding money in all of his teaching.

As he ran on the stage before the more than 12,000 men and women attending he began with this:

“The world ain’t comin’ to an end; God is still on His throne and He is crazy about you!”

He admonished everyone present to take a deep breath and stop fearing the end of the world. He noted that fear is driving the precipitous drops in the markets. He continues to do what he has always done: invest at least 10% in God’s Kingdom; invest at least 10% for personal investment; and live on what remains. He does not use credit. He challenged everyone present when he said that the Body of Christ could be a huge witness to the world if, when all the rest of the world was hurting because of economic failures, the Church stood strong because it had no debt. Unfortunately, most of us are in the same financial position that everyone else is in.

Here are some additional quotes from the talk:

  • Knowledge and perception removes fear.
  • Fear is a spirit and it is not a fruit of the Holy Spirit.
  • We are seeing an artificial low [in the markets] based on the emotion of fear.
  • No one can lead in fear.

I appreciated his homespun common sense advice. I definitely think if you have fear because of the current economic outlook it would be worth your time to check out his website. You also should ask yourself (and God) whether you are trusting in God or in your pocketbook.

Bryan,

Wish I’d known you were coming through the Magic City. I’d have broken ribs with you.

Bryan: You have just posted the most balanced advice I’ve read. Good thoughts.

Bob, I’m so sad that we didn’t connect - I didn’t know more than a few hours before we got there, though, because I was just along for the drive and didn’t know we had plans to stop in Birmingham! As you know well, I’m sure, dem some mighty fine ribs!

I had the chance to be at Catalyst again this year (my 4th time) and was challenged and encouraged as always. It’s always so encouraging being around other leaders and seeing what God is doing in His church around the world.

What session impacted you personally the most?

Brad Ruggles’s last blog post..Pay Attention To The Rule-Breakers

Bryan,
Cale and I took a 12 week class at our church called Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (FPU) last year.

It was the best investment we made in us. The funny thing about it was, we were not even sure our check was going to be covered because we had been so behind in our banking with Cale’s schedule last year. God provided and ( not that we had much debt) but we now do not own a credit card and the only thing we owe is our one of our two cars and a house payment. I am not saying we are living high on a “hog”. I am saying there is peace when you know that your money that comes in doesn’t belong to someone or something else.

Now a year later - we are not the best at the budget ( constantly working on that) - but with the economy ( and three kids) I feel so blessed that God placed the tools in our hands to be prepared for things now and most of all educated at what I was paying for everything and wasting what he blesses me with.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts,
katherine

Brad, i think I was most impacted by a couple of things. First, I was impressed that the data research of Jim Collins demonstrated the Truth revealed so long ago in the Person of Jesus Christ. Jim’s data showed that the greatest of all leaders are humble. Second, I felt impressed to focus my ministry on the most foundational of all organizations or tribes - the family. The more people talked about leading great organizations the more I thought of families. I believe that if we do not have great families we won’t have great businesses. They are the fundamental unit of our society and a return to the family will do much for the Kingdom. This second point was the culmination of sitting through Andy Stanley’s intro, Jim Collins’ talk, Craig Groeschel’s talk, and Seth Godin’s talk.

Thanks for your comment!

Katherine,

That is really amazing how Dave ministered to your family personally through his FPU, a course that is built upon biblical principles regarding money and finance.

We are currently trying to sell our house and once we do that we will be debt free. I plan for us to stay that way. We do have credit cards, but we use them only when we travel and pay them off each month. We find that internationally it is wise to have some ability to use a credit or debit card.

I too am working on our budget as we have definitely “shrunk” in income moving to full-time ministry and we have to use more of our personal funds to live in the US, but God is in charge and we will trust in that!

Brad, I would add that Steven Furtick was unbelievably awesome. I pray that he remains focused on the Cross!
