New Year’s Hangover

But it’s not the kind one might think. It’s worse. I don’t know about you, but it seems like I hit the new year with many hopes and dreams and then it only takes a few hours to realize that I am still me and it is just another day. I yell at my kids; my football team loses; I worry about how much stuff I have to do to get ready to leave the country; I have a house to sell and huge financial pressures; and, in very little time, life can seem bigger than God Himself. Even stupid things like a football game impact my faith and joy.

I can relate to Paul’s lament: O when will I be delivered from this body of death?

And I can see in so many of David’s psalms what kind of God we serve… a God who wants us to share our heart with Him and to let Him know when we are feeling the pressures of life.

O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger
or discipline me in your wrath.
For your arrows have pierced me,
and your hand has come down upon me.

***

I am feeble and utterly crushed;
I groan in anguish of heart.

All my longings lie open before you, O Lord;
my sighing is not hidden from you.

My heart pounds, my strength fails me;
even the light has gone from my eyes.

***

I have become like a man who does not hear,
whose mouth can offer no reply.

I wait for you, O LORD;
you will answer, O Lord my God.

I confess my iniquity;
I am troubled by my sin.

***

O LORD, do not forsake me;
be not far from me, O my God.

Come quickly to help me,
O Lord my Savior.

You see, in the end, all this despair is such a beautiful thing because it is through this I see what an amazing God we serve. In spite of my frailty He reaches down to me and offers me His hand, His joy, His Spirit. Praise God. I am reminded of how He has delivered us from all these things and so much more over the years.

Please keep praying for us as we prepare to leave in just two weeks! it is so easy to fall into worry and despair as we have much to do in preparation and as our enemy desires to keep us there.

We will be praying. I cannot even imagine how much you have to do to prepare for travel. Just preparing for the two of us for one week in Guatemala nearly wore me out. In fact, it did wear me out. (And I haven’t caught up yet :) Anyway, I know what you mean. It is the new year, but I think Satan actually targets me this time of year by constantly reminding me of all the failures in my life. Anyway, let us know if we can help in any way!

PS I wasn’t trying to leave the same post twice…it told me there was an error the first time. Guess not. :)

Man… here I was all ready to come and gloat about my Tigers… :)

In all seriousness, I can relate, at least to some extent. The pressures we face are obviously different, but the sin nature always seems to slip back in.

I’ll be praying for you all over the coming weeks.

Reba, I appreciate the comments! Thank you for your prayers. As we fall more in love with Him, the more we will live for Him and the more we will realize how much He loves us and has forgiven us and strengthens us to live for Him.

John, you should be crowing about your Tigers. They should have been playing in Illinois’ or Hawaii’s place and likely would have had a chance in either of those games. Thank you for your prayers!

Umm…excuse me, but how could you be sad when UGA crushed Hawaii? And, well, please remember you have readers who live in Georgia when you comment…… :)

I pray the LORD will be with you and your family as you prepare for this next phase of your lives in Christ. As you take part in His Great Story, may the Light and Life of our Redeemer be displayed for all to see. May the world around you come to know Him because of His magnificent Life being manifested in you and your family. And may He pour out His abundant blessings on you and cause you to have no fear, no worries, no concerns - but only to have His peace, wisdom and strength.

Happy Year in the LORD and KING Jesus Christ!

Always happy for an SEC team to win unless they’re playing the hogs. What in the world happened to Florida???

I loved the truth and raw honesty of this post. I’m going to pass it along to Scott, as well. We have SO enjoyed getting to know you guys this Fall! Praying for you as you prepare to leave. I hope we’ll come join you for a week or two some day!

Thank you, As.hley. We’ve loved it too and we hope you come out as well! If we don’t see you before we leave the states, we’ll see you outside the states. :)
