Wow. There are many things in scripture that just get skipped over, like, Jesus, “who offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears.” Hebrews 5:7. And think of how he taught that those who mourn and weep are blessed! Matthew 5:4; Luke 6:21. This is Jesus, our savior and Lord, the example of all that we are to follow, and it is Jesus, God Himself. He cried, wept, and did so loudly. This doesn’t even touch on Jeremiah or David, who wrote that he was “weary with . . . moaning” and that he was drenching his couch with weeping. Psalm 6:6.
Foster writes this:
What is it about all this sorrow and weeping and mourning? It sounds a bit depressing, at least to those of us who have been raised on a religion of good feelings and prosperity. The old writers, however, had a very different view. That saw it as a gift to be sought after, the “charism of tears.” For them the people most to be pitied are those who go through life with dry eyes and cold hearts. They actually called this inner heart turmoil “deep joy.”
The more you look at scripture for tears, the more you will find them. The more you look for them in churches today, it might be like looking for a needle in a haystack. May our hearts be more and more broken with the reality of our sin, the reality of the effects of our sin, and the reality of the effects of sin on those who do not know God. Oh, Lord, please break our hearts for the lost and help us love them like you do!!!!
