God is a Magic 8 Ball?!

magic-8-ball.jpgGrowing up I was taught that God answers prayer. But I was taught that He answers prayer “yes,” “no,” or “wait!”

Isn’t that kind of like saying that God is just a magic 8 ball? Isn’t that kind of like saying that God isn’t imaginative enough to provide a direct answer to my question or that I need to frame my questions in a simple fashion like an attorney cross-examining a witness?

If asking God questions is limited to questions like “should I get out of bed?” or “should I go to church?” or “should I get a job?” it’s no wonder people stop asking God questions. Oh how small is my faith in an omniscient and omnipotent God if I can’t trust Him to direct my paths every day. Believe it or not, God loves us so much that He wants to communicate to us more than we really want to hear Him anyway. He surely is speaking - that’s how He works, think Genesis 1.

Bryan,
Great way of putting it. Good encouragement. That God wants to speak to us and is doing so- more than we want to hear him. I agree.

It seems like it’s taken a better part of a lifetime for me to get there and rest in it in just an entry kind of way.

Thanks for encoruaging us to be listening. May we by grace have the heart to really do so and grow in this.

Ted, I really appreciate your comment. (and all the comments.) This was one of those posts that meant a whole lot to me because I really feel like I was taught the wrong thing when I was younger. I think I knew better when I first got saved because of how God was speaking to me, but then it was like I was “civilized” and “matured” by the church into toning down such experiences as really hearing God’s voice specifically rather than just a few limited 8-ball answers.
