Oh how glorious it can be to mine the treasures of God’s Word; just try it!!!
Ponder these jewels from Proverbs 2, one of my favorite passages:
1 My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
2 turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding,
3 and if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,
4 and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD
and find the knowledge of God.
Often we pick up our bibles and we feel like we have no idea where to go or what to read… In those moments, just read. It’s no accident that God says finding His knowledge is like searching for hidden treasure! Go to a book you don’t think you know anything about and read it like you are reading a novel. Find the theme. Find a favorite or key verse. Meditate on the words to discover what it says about the character of our Father. Mine the golden truths within it.
For example, if you want to experience the richness of Who God Is, try reading from Isaiah 40 to the end (Isaiah 66). As you do you will find gems like the following passage in Isaiah 57, showing us the infinite grace of our Father.
16 I will not accuse forever,
nor will I always be angry,
for then the spirit of man would grow faint before me—
the breath of man that I have created.
17 I was enraged by his sinful greed;
I punished him, and hid my face in anger,
yet he kept on in his willful ways.
18 I have seen his ways (God has seen all of our ways… every dirty detail, and yet…), but I will heal him;
I will guide him and restore comfort to him,
19 creating praise on the lips of the mourners in Israel.
Peace, peace, to those far and near,”
says the LORD. “And I will heal them.”
Do you see how full of grace God is in this passage??? He was enraged! Yet He will heal. He will guide and comfort. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch, a worm, like me?!
