What a Fantastic Post on Church Planting!!!

I went by one of my favorite missionary blogsites, Guy Muse’s blog, and found this post, where Guy was sharing something he had read here. I had never visited Bill Lollar’s blog before, but these six principles for church planting were brilliant. Really, I’d just call them steps on following Jesus (or in the common vernacular - being a Christian).

Here are the six steps [with modifications to numbers 2 and 3, indicated by brackets], but check out the original post at the above links!!!

1. Recognize that every Christian is “called” to communicate the Gospel message wherever they currently live and work. That’s the “Great Commission,” so why look for a lesser one? You don’t need anyone else’s permission, since God trumps everyone, and you certainly don’t need an assessment to share the Gospel.

2. Continue in your present occupation (1 Corinthians 7:17-23) [unless God clearly calls (or called you previously) to another], so you can meet your obligations, particularly the one that requires YOU to take care of your family (1 Timothy 5:8) and share with those in need (Romans 12:13; Ephesians 4:28). Ministry [to which all followers of Jesus are called] is not a career path for those seeking a comfortable salary, benefits, and a retirement plan!

3. Act on principle number one and begin sharing the Gospel with your neighbors, friends, co-workers, and family members. There is usually no need to go anywhere else [again unless God tells you to do so], because your world is already full of people who don’t know Jesus! Yes, it’s okay to relocate, as long as you remember principle number two OR a group of believers voluntarily agrees to support you as a missionary in another culture where it is unlikely that you would be allowed to take jobs away from the indigenous people group to whom you are being sent.

4. Since God has promised to provide a harvest for those who labor like this in His vineyard, begin to disciple/teach those who express an interest in spiritual things, expecting the power of the Gospel and the work of the Holy Spirit to bring them to repentance and faith.

5. Meet together with these new believers on a regular basis (Hebrews 10:24-25), thinking of creative ways in which you can stimulate one another to love and minister to others, as well as encouraging each other in the Christian journey.

6. Teach every new believer how to follow the above principles!

Very concisely put, and helpful. While I listlessly wonder how to start a revolution, it has frequently come as a relief that God really does ask me only to abide in Him, to enjoy abundant life and let people know where my Joy comes from. The mission is wherever we are.

I too was blown away by the simplicity of what church planting boils down to. While not getting much response on this post over at my own blog, I still think these principles shared by Bill deserve a wider reading. I spent the day today observing all six principles in action with a group of young believers who may not ever read any of our blogs, but are out there doing what the rest of us can only write about!

BTW, before reading your blog tonight, I had already posted another of your posts on my own site. Great minds think alike? :)

Bryan,
I appreciate your editorial inclusions. While I often struggle with the professionalistic view of ministry that I find myself a part of, I can’t throw calling out the window.

One concern that the original post left me with (and I’ve been known to miss things) is the idea behind not looking for lesser places to work (emphasis mine) found in point #1. Agreed, all beleivers are commissioned to work where they are (as they are going about the daily walk of life). At the same time, if we don’t cast our eyes about, there are areas where the message of Christ (lesser places?) will never be heard.

Church planting as a Industry (see Greg Alford’s comment at http://thin-edge.org/2007/05/15/planting-a-new-church-like-falling-off-a-log)? Certainly not!

Planting churches (gatherings of Christ followers working together to followers # 4, 5, & 6)? This is a must!

Greg, I know your heart burns passionately to make a difference. Just keep growing in your love and understanding of the Father and let His love flow through you to others and you will see His Kingdom advancing mightily!

Benjamin, I hear you but I have to ask myself, is calling something different than simply listening to God’s voice in my life and can’t His purpose for us change during the course of our lives? That is all I am suggesting - a sensitivity to His call (His voice) in our lives. But also, I know firsthand that although a call may remain the same, I didn’t always follow it and had to make a change to begin following my call.

Guy, I posted that a while back, but it sure was a good find. I too was amazed at what seemed like little money for an American, how wealthy I am compared to the world. I think Alan Knox also put it up today over at Assembling of the Church.

Hello

I can’t be bothered with anything these days, but shrug. I just don’t have anything to say recently.

Bye
