Do You Feel Hopeless?

chkeng.jpgHope - is it elusive?

If you are a follower of Jesus, hopelessness is like the engine light coming on in your vehicle. Hopelessness indicates more than just lost hope; hopelessness means we have placed our faith in something other than God - idolatry - and that our love for God and others is ebbing.

Have you ever said anything like this?

“I just don’t have much hope for that church anymore.”

“I just don’t have much hope for my marriage.”

“My teenager is hopeless.”

“I keep falling to the same sin, time and time again, and I just can’t stop. This is hopeless.”

Or, like is being said by many young leaders in the Southern Baptist denomination, “I don’t have much hope for the convention anymore.”

Consider these verses:

[B]ecause we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints— the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth. . . .if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant. [This is] the Word of God in its fullness—the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

As followers of Jesus we have met the God who loves. We have met a God who is always faithful, always loving, always kind, always merciful, always compassionate, always giving, always true. He has never once failed to accomplish His promises or purposes. If we lack hope it absolutely indicates that we have placed our hope in something other than God. This is a black and white truth in an otherwise gray world. When someone loses hope in a marriage it is because their hope was in a person, not God, whether it be oneself or one’s spouse. When someone loses hope in a denomination it is because the denomination has become more dear to them than God Himself, and a denomination simply isn’t faithful or true, not like God.

The next time you feel yourself starting to say or feel that you have lost hope, the first step to take is to repent and turn to the One who can fill you with hope. Pray with Paul…

“May the God of hope fill [me] with all joy and peace as [I will place my] trust in Him [and Him alone], so that [I] may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13 (adapted to personalize).

More steps to follow coming soon…

Dear Bryan: hopeless? yes, I have said some of those things, thought some of those things. However it was before Christ dwelled within my soul. Since then, all circumstances–be they painted black or brown–are, to me, an opportunity to see God work and to witness His Sovereign hand.

Not one sparrow falls to the ground without God’s knowledge and permission. We are all given such blessed peace that passes all understanding. We are all lost without our Shepherd.

I truly believe that we make mountains out of molehills. I know my Lord is bigger than any mountain I can or cannot see. My hope is built on nothing less. sincerely yours, selahV

Yes, praise God that He is our Hope! As this world turns more and more upside down, we must choose to keep focused on the One who upholds all things by the word of His power.
You, Bryan Riley, are a light that shines in this dark world. I pray that as you prepare for departure to the Phillipines, His light will shine ever brighter within you and dispel all tension or trepidation. I pray that the Fire that is within you will set the hearts of the Phillipines’ on fire for our LORD and King Jesus Christ!!

Thank you for your words. My wife has given up hope for ever seeing out grandson Brandon again. Brandon and his mother Tabitha are the reasons we moved to Texas from Fayetteville. Tabitha wanted her mother and her grandmother close by after she learned that she was pregnant. Brandon came into this world 5 years ago and we had him in our homes many weekends and every day as his mother and father had local jobs. His father got very angry that I was teaching Brandon about God and Jesus and for taking him to “Gods House” on Sunday while his parents lived a very wicked sinful lifestyle. His father(Rodger) FALSELY accused me of sexually abusing Brandon back last September and we have not seen Brandon since. He and his parents lived four houses down from us, but they moved the week prior to last Thanksgiving and we do not know where they live. Rodger and Tabitha desperately need to come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as that is the only way that this family can be restored. My wife lost her mental health over the grief of losing her grandson and the fellowship with her daughter and my mother in law is dying of a very bad heart. This family desperately needs prayer as I have recently lost myjob and have no way to provide.

John, thank you for sharing. I pray you will find your source in Jesus, because He alone is our comfort and source for life. It seems wise often to turn to other things, or to try to handle things in our own strength, but only God can ultimately meet our needs. The good news is that He has and will so long as we trust in Him.
