You’ve Got 40 Days to Live …

Here is an interesting observation from Acts 1:3:

After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

Here we have Jesus, back from death, knowing that He would only be there with His followers for forty days and that He was going to leave it with these people to build the Church, His bride. With that knowledge I think it is fair to say that He was going to discuss with them the essential. Read back over the verse. What did he speak with them about?

The Kingdom of God.

There are quite a few scriptures on the Kingdom of God. Have you ever studied it? What is it? What is its significance? Frankly, I’ve not heard many really unpack it but Jesus sure did talk about it a lot.

This is the way I understand the Kingdom…

Mark 1:14 & 15 to me sum it up. “And after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel”

Jesus is the door to the Kingdom. To enter into the Kingdom, you must repent of self-rule and turn control of your life over to the King. He cannot reign & rule where He is not King.

An exchange must take place. His life for ours. We decrease, He increases. We are crucified with Him.

Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection made it possible for His life to be manifest in ours. The cleansing by His perfect blood had to take place in order for Him to dwell within us (the Kingdom come).

We cannot allow the things of the world to choke out the Truth of His reign.

Isn’t it interesting that the disciples did not preach the death, burial, & resurrection? Yet, they were preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom.

“Repent of ruling yourself and having it your way and believe in the One who would have it His way within you!!!”

Great comments, Marie. We also are called as Sons of the King! And, we can look at the parable of the wheat and the tares and see what seeds God sows to the Nations… Check that out.

I am not sitting with my Bible in front of me but I am recalling many times when Jesus says “the Kingdom of God is like…” the yeast among bread the women and the oil in their lamps that ran out, the woman who lost a coin. I am sure there are many more. I can just picture Jesus telling his followers these stories. Then, suffering an incomprehensible death AND resurrection. Then, picking right back up teaching them and telling them about the kingdom. In their minds , you know they had to be thinking “man, this has got to be Jesus. We’ve heard him talk like that before.”
