What Is A Missionary?

A missionary is any follower of Jesus actively walking in the Spirit who takes the Kingdom of God wherever he or she is led by the Father, serving and loving others in the name of Jesus, teaching them to love God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and to love one another.

I would add… teaching them to obey all that Christ has commanded…. that is part of love.
Beth :)

Good addition, Beth, but that is what I meant by teaching them to love God. If they love God they will obey His commands. If we focus on the commands without teaching His love and the corresponding love for Him that comes with a greater understanding of His love, then it will be empty and not true obedience.

Bryan,

I have family (non-believers) who would define a missionary as someone who breaks the laws of other countries to try to convert people to their religion. Would you use a different definition to help change their perception? Or would you leave it the same?

Mary

Just to clarify,

I wasn’t implying that your definition was supporting my family’s perception (I actually like your definition), I’m just wondering if there’s a different way I’d define definitions for them verses how I’d define it for believers. I hope that clarified my question.

Mary

No worries, Mary, I completely understood. I do think there is a way to say things to non-Christians that doesn’t use churchy words. I think you can define missionary as someone who serves others, to meet their needs, teaching them how to live more abundant lives, physically, emotionally (and spiritually). Of course, the best definition of all won’t be with words; instead, it will be by doing it. Loving them!

Bryan,

I agree. Actually walking the walk is the best definition. Thanks.

Mary

Bryan, it’s interesting that in your definition there is no reference to being sent out by a church or board or entity. Simply the Father sends you. As Isaiah said, “here am I, Lord, send me.”

Those some missionaries serve in a country other than their birth, and some other than their home state, all serve when they can be defined by your definition of missionary. I think one who leaves all behind is commendably more sacrificial and admirably encouraging for those who live to serve in their own communities. selahV
