Overcomplicating Simplicity

“I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” Luke 18:17.

Why do we complicate the simple? Why is it we struggle so much with whether we are called into or gifted in evangelism or missions? We aren’t called into evangelism or missions; we are commissioned into evangelism and missions.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20.

To whom is Jesus speaking? His followers.

Are you His follower?

Do you need an entire commentary to explain what Jesus meant when He commanded this and commissioned His followers?

So what gives?

This is the message we share with all our new church planters. The whole “authority” issue is a big one to overcome. Once a believer gets it into his heart that it is the LORD who has commissioned them to do these things they become dynamite in His hands. However, if they are looking for a “green light” from either an ordination council, denominational board, pastoral authority figure, or any other source outside of Christ himself, they will not likely ever do much in the Kingdom.

It’s interesting that Jesus did not say “Go and make Christians”. He said”Go and make disciples”. I think many of our leaders today have twisted that around and placed a burden on Christians that only God Himself can carry. He makes Christians, we disciple them.

Of course, I’m not saying don’t evangelize! But it would seem that many of the methods used today are failing because we put too much faith in man’s works and methods and the end result are so-called Christians that are falling away like flies! God builds the church. When will we get it?

Good comments. I suppose one of my main concerns is that so few go at all. A second concern is that so few make disciples at all. The harvest is ripe and abundant.. but the workers are so few. Why?????

I keep hearing from around the world that people are prayin that the American church would be persecuted and thereby moved to action. Do you hear that too, Guy? Is that happening in Ecuador?

Bryan: “the workers are so few, why?”

Because Jesus is not given freedom to move within their temples. (pun not intended) If our hearts were filled with Him and we abandoned our rights to Him and our ambitions, our ideas, our pre-conceived notions of what is best for others, then He’d have the means by which to work out His plan through us. We just keep getting in His way, bumping into Him as we push our way around the house. SELF-centeredness rather than Christ-centeredness. selahV
