Encouragement – More than just pretty words…

When you think of encouragement what do you think of?

Do you think of it as a compliment?
Do you think of it as comfort or making someone comfortable?
Do you think of it as a positive emotional display toward someone?
Do you think of it as trying to make someone happy?

This past Sunday at King’s Community Church in Bedworth the pastor challenged us to think of encouragement as “putting courage in” another. When you live to put courage in one another, it will change the way you approach others. And, ultimately, the purpose is to spur one another on to love and good works. Hebrews 10:24. Now, as you ponder encouragement in this way, meditate on the below verses.

Romans 15:4-7

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.

With that I leave you until my next post, which will visit on our effort toward a spirit of unity and peace. God bless and in His Love…

Bryan,

Good post. I have never thought of encouragement as “putting courage in another”. I have always thought of encouragement as similare to edification or building up. I think of it as motivating someone toward maturity in Christ. Thus, encouargement is not necessarily through “pretty words”. It can come through words of chastisement or admonition.

Good additions, Alan. Moving one to maturity in Christ will, by definition, put courage in that one. As we fix our eyes on Jesus, Truth and Love, fear will be cast aside. As we can help another see Him more clearly, it cannot help but build courage in that brother or sister’s heart!

I am always encouraged by your words, Bryan. Thank you for speaking the Truth in love in all your posts and comments. Continue to exhort us…we need it.

Thank you, Sarah, for putting courage in me to continue to seek to know Him more and more. Praise God we serve a God who desires to know us and to be known by us in an intimate way!

I love the ministry of encouragement. I think that is the single most important thing we can do for others…and it’s alot more than just a pretty word. It does involve awareness, insight, communication, understanding, risk, courage, I could go on and on. Who knows what tragedy could next be avoided if we take the time to encourage our fellow sojourners on the sometimes tough path of life.

I still remember what one speaker said about encouragement. She pointed out that following Hebrews 11 is this verse in Ch. 12: “And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addressed you as sons:

‘My son, do not make light of the Lod’s discipline, and do not lose heart when He rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those He loves, and He punishes everyone He accepts as a son.”

Hardly what we usually think of when desiring for encouragement…

Oops, I meant, “Hardly what we usually think of when desiring encouragement (what we think of as encouragement).

Good comments, Isabel. Thanks for adding to the conversation. Alan Knox also just posted on encouragement and talked about Hebrews.
