Black Pudding Anyone??

img_2775.JPGOur classes do not begin until Friday, April 6th. In the meantime, we have a little time to recover from jet lag. It would be nice to travel a bit in England but we also have no transportation. Thus, today, while Tara, Keaton and Regan continued their recovery (Keaton and Regan have fevers), Tanner and I made the jaunt on foot into Nuneaton, which lies about 2 miles from the King’s lodge.

By the time we made it into town we had walked up a bit of a hunger, so we stopped at the Riverside Cafe. We were greeted by three smiling faces who made our time there a joy. img_2779.JPGThey served us up a bit of breakfast which included sausage, tomatoes, beans, an egg, toast, ham, and black pudding. For the unitiated and uninformed, which included me, black pudding is not American chocolate pudding or anything of the sort. tanner-riverside-cafe-nuneaton.JPG No, black pudding is a “sausage” made of congealed blood, fat, and other such yummy ingredients that you can serve chilled or fried up hot. The black stuff on my plate was fried up hot and happened to be of the pork blood variety. I must say that I had to eat it without thinking about what it was. But, mixed in with the beans and tomatoes it was quite tasty.

The meal was great and the company was even better. We learned quite a bit about bus and train travel in England from the shop owners and where we could go to get things like a mattress pad for a lumpy bed. They also enjoyed hearing our southern drawl as much as we enjoyed their English accent. They were incredibly hospitable, sharing a Kit Kat candy bar with Tanner, and they even sent me home with some of the black pudding to share with the rest of the family. I literally walked out with something that looked like this in my backpack: black pudding Back at the King’s Lodge they told me I needn’t worry about labeling my booty because few would fight over it for breakfast. :)

It was a wonderfully sunny day of about 60 degrees for Tanner and me to enjoy our day into town. We probably walked about 5 miles together hand in hand, enjoyed several new sights, and learned a little bit more about English life.

Yes, Bryan I actually read your blog and this was not my first time. You needn’t worry about tracking down a recipe for Black Pudding on my account and I am quite certain that the girls would also be uninterested. I hope you were able to find that mattress pad and some of the other “luxuries” you have been trying to find.
Mike

Sure, Mike. I will try to post some Dr. Seuss for you. ;)

Let’s just say I’m still not sure if my tummy is totally settled from it, but it did taste good. I just would have been better off never knowing that I was eating fried blood jell-o.

I did find something that I hope helps Tara’s ribs.

Yes, but it will take time for the black pudding to help her ribs. I think it was smart to get the mattress pad. In the long run, you will probably both be happier with that.

The hidden benefit of the mattress pad was that it further insulated the bed, so the entire bed felt warmer. We are thinking of looking for the same for the kids just to provide some warmth. Either that or throwing them all in one bed.

Black pudding- it would be, and rightly so, condmned by the Levitical code. Disgusting!

Yes, Francoise, I did find it somewhat ironic that it would be a big “no no” under the Levitical code!

Toor right. Ewwww! How did you manage to keep it down?

Enjoy your stay in that lovely green land- wish I was there, but in April, it’d be far too cold for this Aussie. The Poms are great people- a little reserved by our standards, but great once the initial walls have been breached. I had a blast over there and can’t wait to get back and poke around some haunted castles.
