More on the Power of Words… and Listening

I don’t get a lot of comments (I wish more readers would comment because much of what I write is me thinking out loud and seeking to be taught as much as teach), but the ones I get are often fabulous. I also know that some readers don’t read beyond the posts, so, I wanted to make a special note of a recent comment by Meredith in response to the post The Power of Words.

Meredith wrote:

…The tongue is so small, yet so powerful and difficult to tame. I once did an experiment for myself that I did not speak (bar my kids and of necessity) except when asked a question. I did this for a month and it was such an eye opener for me. It was also more peaceful than the many situations I get myself into. Thanks for the reminder and yes, listening is such a rarity, I think it really grabs people attention, as well as lending an environment that we can learn more about ourselves, about God, about life, about others…

I also recently linked to Molly Aley’s fabulous post on 30 Days of Nothing, and she has followed up on that post with two more posts you should read, here and here. I thought that perhaps one of the things that one do during a 30 Days of Nothing would be to take on Meredith’s experiment: not to speak unless spoken to (or with kids/necessity).

My tongue has gotten me in trouble way too many times. I learned from my beautiful bride the art of listening. She is a former social worker and is amazing to see how people are drawn to her.

It is actually draining for her but I’ve never seen a person who can get a stranger to pour their lives out to another like Cassandra.

Listen, listen, listen. That is what I have learned.

It’s pretty easy to just blurt out some platitude when you’re dealing with people. Listening is much better.

You are so right, Josh. And that includes listening first to God’s voice, often before we should even speak!

Kevin, isn’t it awesome how God blesses us with just the right wife?!

NOT SPEAK?????

It would be far easier for me to eat brown rice for a year. lol…

Thanks for the links, brother. :)

Would that include not blogging? My wife would probably suggest that I could go without speaking, but not without blogging.

Bryan,

I am one of those who visit your site at least 2-3 times a week. Our stories are very similar in that, even though a successful secular career had been established, God called us into a life of career missions. I was moved by your ’step of faith’ post from several weeks ago, particularly the faith you described in raising your own support. I received a note from Tara’s sister, Tammy, this morning and she told me you guys will be visiting Conway this weekend. I understand that you may be speaking during AWANA time Sunday. My wife and I will be singing during “big church” Sunday night, so I won’t be there during “share time”. However, my two children, Elizabeth and Noah, will both be present and I look forward to hearing what wisdom they glean from your time together. I hope our paths cross this weekend, but if not, know that your family remains on my missionary prayer list. What an awesome gift you are presenting to your children!!

As for this post on the tongue…as you know, the tongue (or references to the tongue) is mentioned throughout the book of James. For me, the verse that just really gets my attention is from James 1:26 – “If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.” It’s a hard pill for me to swallow when I think about times when my tongue becomes unleashed. It doesn’t matter how much I pray, how much I serve Him, how many hours I spend in the Word…as His Word says, if I don’t keep a tight rein on my tongue, it is for nothing.

Again, may God continue to be heard through your words and through your faith.

In Christ alone,
Steve

Molly, o how I relate! Sigh. But, after eating rice almost every day for three months in Hawaii… hmmmm.

Steve, your emails, both directly to us and en masse, have been a great encouragement. It has been wonderful to see your journey, too.

Yes, that is a hard teaching. No man can tame it, but God can.

Alan,

My wife would probably like for me to do a blog fast at times. :)

And, she would probably also like for me to do a talking fast, as opposed to talking fast. :)

What you write is so encouraging!

The God that we serve is boundless and when I, truely, stand and watch I become speechless. That is the importance of renewing our mind – to be still and a let God. The World wants us to act – respond – move – plan – and that jiration usually leads to words and actions spent unwisely.

The silence that you see at times says more about what you are writing – like the silence in some sermons – shows that God is speaking – not man.

Continue to share what God is showing you. That is showing your heart – one owned by God. That is what people need and want.

Be encouraged – In Christ!

Hi God bless as you start your Missionary work with the Lord in the Philippines. I have been a full time Missionary a very short time in Ozamiz City which is about 5 hours drive from where you are going. If you have time you can check out how things have been going with me so far on the website i use.. John

Thank you, John, for introducing yourself. We will get to the Philippines at the end of June, spending a couple of days in Manila and then flying down to Mindanao (Cagayan de Oro). We look forward to it. Perhaps we will be able to connect! Another filipino misisonary occasions this site, Kevin, who is in Manila.

Spencer, I found your comment in my spam box. Thank you for letting me know you had written! I forget to check.

You are spot on!
