Lessons in Real Living at the Hairy Feet of Bilbo Baggins

“If more of us valued food and cheer and song [as you do] above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” – Thorin Oakenshield to Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit

Perhaps Thorin had just had a quiet time studying this:

I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owner, . . . . Then I realized that it is good and proper for a man to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in his toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given him—for this is his lot. Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work—this is a gift of God. He seldom reflects on the days of his life, because God keeps him occupied with gladness of heart.

I just finished reading this excellent classic to Tanner (8) and Keaton (5) after about two weeks of nightly readings. I would encourage parents to read such books to their children.

Eeeeekkk!!! I HATE Hobbits!!!!! Don’t ask me why. I first read “The Hobbit” when it was all the rage ( which indicates just how ancient I am), and all I could think of was how to catch a hobbit, shave its nasty fur off, then dangle it over a barbecue. Ugh, what an introduction to your blog, Bryan. I think I’ll consult my lawyer about heavy damages for a near-coronary….

LOL. Sorry, Francoise. My boys loved it. I really enjoyed the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. I didn’t read them until the movies were being developed. I don’t know how I missed them as a child, but I did. I hope you will make it further in (to steal a phrase from Narnia), in spite of your aversion to the Hobbit.

G’day Bryan. It’s 3-30am, far too hot to sleep, so I thought I’d annoy people in cyberspace til sunrise.

I know, I know! There’s something seriously wrong with me!! I can’t abide Tolkien. I tried watching the film, just to see what it was that I was missing, and after 20 minutes, zapped the video and felt a lot better for it.

If your boys like fantasy, I couldn’t recommend too highly the winner of the Carnegie Prize for children’s literature in 1947- “The Little White Horse” by Elizabeth Goudge. Exquisite writing, haunting imagery, wonderful story of good vs evil, and the locaton is so wonderfully evoked that every time I visit England, I keep my eye out for it, as I’m convinced that it exists. Such is the power of Goudge’s pen. Her greatest strength is that you can’t tell when reality ends and fantasy begins- it’s perfectly seamless.

But as for Hobbits…g’rrr! Gnash! Spit!

Francoise, you sound like me… often rising early, unable to sleep. Do you drink caffeine? I’m glad you chose to go farther in for your morning read. Thanks!

Going further in? Is that a literary quote of some sort? In the words of our beloved (NOT!) former Member of Parliament, Pauline Hansen, “Please explain!”

No, I avoid caffeine like the plague. It’s the heat which awakens me. We’ve had some horribly humid days and the weekend is shaping up to be a true stinker, complete with scorching winds and bushfires.

That, plus when one reaches old age, the need for sleep decreases, so I’m told. My doctor tells me that I’m a freak of Nature, being able to work all day and party all night, which he says is a true gift. I attribute it to good brandy, home-made icecream and a happy marriage.

I’m not surprised that you’re a lawyer- in fact I suspected as much. All those questions….it reminded me of Crown prosecutors. Hubby is one as well. He occasionally nags me to do another degree, but I’ve seen enough of the Law.

Where in USAare you?
